Buying carpet for your home or business can be a difficult task. We are here to help you through the process. Could you benefit from a free consultation on purchasing carpet ? Wouldn't it be reassuring to know that we can represent you in the buying process ? Our goal with USClean carpet consultation is to get you the best deal that meets your needs.

8 facts you should know about buying carpet !

Fact 1 : There is a lot of carpet !

Millions of square feet of carpet are thrown away each year which means there is a lot of carpet being made! High volume requires many distributors.

Fact 2 : Carpet dealers tell you what you want to hear, not what you need !

As professional cleaners and carpet consultants we get asked a lot if someone purchased the right type of carpet for their home. Most of the time the wrong type of carpet was purchased to fit the needs of the home. Not to say anything bad about people who sell carpet but they’re trained to tell you what you want to hear and give you a recommendation to make a sale on a carpet. Their opinions are often directed toward benefitting the sales person more than the homeowner.

Do you want an honest opinion and recommendation to fit your needs? Professional carpet cleaners and consultants like USClean are interested in helping you.

Fact 3 : There are different types of carpet.

Carpet material is broken down into 2 categories: Natural & Synthetic.

Natural fibers come from either an animal or plant.

Wool : Comes from sheep.
Pros : very strong, great dye acceptance, flame retardant, resilient, natural crimp, natural insulator, sound absorbent and a very long life span.
Cons : stains easily, hides up to 360% of its weight in soil, expensive and is chemical sensitive.

Silk : Comes from silk worms.
Pros : elastic, great dye acceptance and flame retardant.
Cons : stains easily, very expensive and is chemical sensitive.

Cotton : Comes from the seed pod of the cotton plant and is primarily used in either the warp or weft yarns when constructing the backing of the carpet pile.
Pros : strong, absorbent, heat and static resistant.
Cons : stains easily, mildew, browning and shrinkage.

Sisal, Jute, Sea Grass, & Coir : Comes from various plants.
Pros : strong and durable.
Cons : flammable, mildew, shrinkage and is chemical sensitive.

Synthetic fibers are man-made and make up the majority of the carpet in homes and offices.

Nylon : Went through 5 generations to get it to where it is today.
Pros : strong, good elasticity, static resistant, resilient, non-absorbent, responds well to cleaning and is fairly inexpensive.
Cons : good dye acceptance, can stain easily, bleaching and fading.

Polyester : Can be known as the “green” carpet because it can be made out of recycled products. Primarily found in upholstery.
Pros :resists bleach and fading, stain resistant, environmentally friendly, soft and inexpensive.
Cons : does not resist oil, crimp loss, dye resistant and has a short life span.

Olefin/Polypropylene : Known as Berber carpet.
Pros : moisture, chemical and fade resistant, light weight, inexpensive, strong and cleans easily.
Cons : not resilient, low melting point, loves oil, difficult to dye and wicks soil. Acrylic, Rayon, Acetate. These fibers mimic natural fibers. Not very common and very inexpensive.

Fact 4 : Choosing the right material can be the difference of saving or losing money.

If the wrong type of material is installed in your home it may cost you several thousand dollars down the road. The IICRC did a study in 2007 which showed that the average household replaced their carpet every 7 years! Where do you want to be before or after? Believe it or not we at USClean have cleaned many homes where people had 2 or 3 year old carpet that was ready to be replaced. We have cleaned many other homes where the carpet was 20+ years and still going strong.

Do you want to make the best investment possible given your financial situation and household needs? Call us right now and USClean’s expert team of carpet cleaners and consultants can help you out today!

Fact 5 : Most people choose carpet based on aesthetics.

The IICRC did a study in 2007 finding that the majority of people pick carpet based on aesthetics (most commonly, color and style). After determining what looks best, feeling and comfort of the carpet was considered.

Does anyone care about the longevity and cleanablity of the carpet? Not at the moment of buying it! This is an afterthought. In our opinion this should be at the forefront of choosing carpet because it is what is going to make your investment last longer. Did you know there may be a way to find a solution to meet aesthetic need as well as longevity and cleanability? Find out how by call a USClean carpet consultant now.

Fact 6 : The pad makes a difference.

The pad is a very important factor when purchasing carpet. It makes the carpet spring back and feels comfortable on your feet. Choosing the right type of pad can increase the longevity of your carpet. The pad is measured by its ability to resist weight. You may hear someone say, “I have a 6 lb. pad under my carpet.” This means that the pad is able to withstand 6 lbs. of weight per square inch.

The higher the number the more weight the pad will be able to sustain which will help the carpets last longer. Unfortunately the pad can serve as a problem because it can absorb a lot of liquid (from spills or urine) causing stains to re-surface after cleanings. Good padding will have a protective coating or sheath on the top, helping to prevent liquid from being absorbed. There is even a new variety of carpet padding that will not allow for any liquid penetration. When purchasing a carpet take the pad seriously and don’t settle for the cheap stuff. You do get what you pay for.

Do you want to make the best decision when choosing the right padding? One of the USClean carpet consultants can help.

Fact 7 : Installing carpet is more than it seems.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of carpet dealers who train or hire carpet installers that do not follow the Standard for Installation of Residential Carpet – CRI 105. The Certified Floor Covering program (or CFI - http://www.cfiinstallers.com) is an organization that teaches and certifies carpet installers.

These manuals, classes and exams exist for a reason. It is because there are a lot of installers who do bad work! Doesn’t it make sense to hire a certified installer when making an investment on your flooring?

Do you want to make sure your carpet is installed the right way? Let one of the USClean carpet consultant technicians help you find the right installer.

Fact 8 : Cheaper is not always better.

It’s definitely true that you get what you pay for. Cheap carpet is constructed differently, has less face yarns, poor padding and a poor carpet protectant on it. It may look good for a couple of years but eventually wear is going to kick in and apparent soiling is going to start to show. You may save yourself a few bucks in the short run but you’ll be spending more money in the long when opting to spend less.

On a slim budget but need new carpet? Let USClean’s staff of qualified carpet consultants help you find exactly what you need.
